Srinagar, Feb 03 (KNO): The Government of India (GoI) has stated that there was no proposal to establish a Mountaineering and Skiing Institute in Kargil, Union Territory of Ladakh. Responding to a query raised by Lok Sabha MP Mohmad Haneefa, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated that while Kargil offers promising opportunities for mountaineering and skiing, the government has no immediate plans to set up a dedicated institute there. As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr. Mandaviya pointed out that the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam, which operates under the Ministry of Defence, already conducts mountaineering and skiing courses at multiple training centers. These include Sonmarg, Gulmarg, Sanasar, Bhaderwah, and Shey Leh (Ladakh), serving participants from across the country, including Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, the reply reads. The JIM&WS institute is co-funded by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir. However, no concrete steps have been taken to establish a similar facility in Kargil—(KNO)
